How to Plan a Birthday Party for an Autistic Child in Perth

Here at Game Vault we understand that trying to organise a birthday party for an autistic child in Perth can be difficult.

Parties are usually noisy, colourful and an event that is out of a child’s normal routine. For children with autism a party can mean complete sensory overload.

As we have a great deal of knowledge and experience when dealing with parties for children with autism, we have put together a guide to help you with your party planning.

Planning

1) Have a small gathering with friends or family members that your child is most comfortable with.

2) Let your child play as big a part in the planning process as they wish. Depending on the child’s age and ability, they may be able to help with choosing the cake, games, invitations and food.

3) Once you have decided which of your child’s friends to invite, try to plan the party date to fit their schedule. Tell their parents that you want to find a date that works for their child because their child’s attendance is important to your child.

4) Explain to your child exactly what will happen on the day of the party, right down to the smallest details.

5) Chase RSVPs as politely as possible so that your child knows who will be there. This also works as a reminder to the parents about the party. Make sure you tell the parent that your child is looking forward to seeing their child there.

6) Bare in mind that your child may not want to participate in all aspects of the birthday party such as the cake cutting, presents, etc. When they need a time out, let them take a break.

7) Save present opening for later. It can be incredibly overwhelming for your child to open all of their presents while everyone is gathered around watching. Explain to the parents that your child will be opening presents later that night when things have calmed down.
